    Yakuza 4 report part 2:

@unmanneddrone Still can’t get it to work tonight, but whatever.

The Mahjong didn’t go so well but if I ever have the time I’ll revisit it in Premium Adventure mode. Still, I am astounded at how each character in this game manages to be more interesting as the last, at least from a gameplay standpoint. Four games and three parts in and Sega has figured out how to keep Kamuocho fresh.

With Akiyama the roofs, underground mall, and underground parking lot are revealed. With Saejima you get that along with the sewers and subway which reveals a whole other underworld of homeless people. With the multilingual Taijima Sega added what’s basically the narrows of the city – new, even thinner, more labyrinthine, and even meaner back alleys where all the illegal Chinese and Korean immigrants hang out.

And Taijima is definitely the grayest playable character yet. A cynical dude, he knowingly deals in hush money with enterprises he knows are “in the business,” mostly whorehouses too, but he puts his on-the-side earnings into more “noble” underground enterprises like immigration and such. He’s one of those cops that tries to contain the corrupt Miami Vice-style rather than root it out altogether.

I concur with @beige on Yakuza 4. I also just started on the crooked Tokyo Cop Tanimura’s story. Even though each character’s story takes place in the exact same town, each one has quests tailored specifically for them and they can each access different parts of town the others can’t. Pretty excited to start doing stuff on the other side of the law for a bit.

Actually, one of the first things you have the choice to do in the third part is play Mahjong for some information. There’s a way you can cop out of it, but no, I’m gonna do this thing, Japanese-Mahjong-guide-on-iPad-in-hand if I have to.

To be honest though, I’ve mostly been busting through the main quest on this one. If there’s one thing Y4 has it’s variety, but so far it’s also turning out to have the most interesting main storyline of any Yakuza game, even if most of it is displayed through long, unpausable cut scenes.

    Crowning Moment So Far:
**Start at 7 minutes and 47 seconds**

@beige Yeah. Yakuza 4 (and Radiant Historia) now, Crysis 2 and possible Dragon Age later… if I don’t get caught up with The Witcher.

The thing is though, amidst all the DA II buzz, I’m just not seeing the thing that pulled me in to the first game, and I was even cautious enough to wait for a Steam sale on that one.
