@rocgaude How is it that I’ve never heard of “Offworld” in all the time that I’ve known you people? It’s a secret to everybody.

I want to make you all aware of a current event that has made me smile:

I’m sure many of you remember the fantastic gaming blog, “Offworld”, that Brandon Boyer ran for Boing Boing. Like many other “niche” gaming sites, they found it very difficult to justify it’s existence financially and closed it down. This hit a lot of enthusiasts right in the gut as we’ve grown quite fond of outlets that treat our shared love of gaming with the maturity and respect it deserves.

Yesterday, Brandon posted a Kickstarter project to essentially “re-launch” an Offworld-like site called “Venus Patrol”. He was hoping to raise the necessary $50,000 in 30 days. He did it in less then 24 hours.

When you visit the project page, pay special attention to the sponsorship numbers. Game enthusiasts have a horrible reputation as being whiny, entitled “cheapskates”. The numbers I saw directly discounted that.

This shows me that there IS a market for the kind of coverage we want and deserve. Massive kudos to Brandon for his courage and insistence on continuing the push for a higher standard of game coverage. I love feeling that there’s hope for this silly little corner of the internet after all.
