@Feenwager I saw the Giantbomb quicklook for that game. Looks to me like Telltale gets Back to the Future. I’m really impressed by the guy who voices Marty, “Doc, are you telling me you bult a time machine…out of a DeLorean?!“.

@beige I hear you man. There’s a reason why detractors were calling 4e a WoW clone. They were right in the sense that you could easily map a 4e character’s powers to buttons on a UI with cooldowns. It really doesn’t take much of a leap. Also, I’ll stop calling you crazy, until you beat the Demon’s Souls sequel anyway.

@cptcarnage lol, screw that. There’s a line I won’t cross and those achievements embody it. I can barely get past any level without messing it up on the first try. My method was brute force. Regardless, the world still awaits the chosen one who can complete Cotton Alley without dying.

I love Assassin’s Creed 2 so far (thanks again, Mark/Lynette!) and I absolutely adore the Ezio Family theme, I just wish I didn’t have to replay the beginning 3 times because Ubisoft’s shitty online solution constantly screws up the autosaves.

    Anyway, Merry Christmas guys.

Yes! Darksiders is 10 dollars on Steam today, Alpha Protocol on sale too, if you want to take @cgrajko’s word for it.

    Also,
I never want to see another saw blade again.

Okay so maaaybe Super Meat Boy is worth $3.75.

The one and only reason I can even bear the game though is because I own one of these:

No one should EVER have to play this game with the default Xbox 360 D pad.

@mjpilon Short answer: I don’t have the time.

Long answer: The trailers didn’t look that appealing and I’m not really up right now for a game that’s super hard-ass just for the sake of being super hard-ass and old school.

@beige Yeah, you’d have to play super carefully and deliberately. There wouldn’t be much room for, you know, fun. I think that’s why I don’t mind stepping up to Super Meat Boy’s dark side, because other than warp zones where lives are limited and bandages are plentiful (100/100 baby!) you only ever lose a few minutes at most.

I watched a guy play Demon’s Souls on justin.tv. He fought a fire boss for like 20 minutes and then died. I felt a sense of loss just watching it, I can only imagine how he felt.

@squad Steam sale, bring it on! Just remember to not buy any of the regular sales until the last day when all the daily sales are done.

@mjpilon @cptcarnage Sheer force of will, and about two hours of pain. The first screen took the longest, but it’s not as insane as it looks once you get the muscle memory down (although you’ll still fuck up the first drop 1,000 times anyway). It’s that last 1/3 of it that’s really nerve wracking. I disagree with that diagram though. After the second set of wall jumps you don’t need to hit the wall and jump across, you can just fall and then hit the double jump (with run), and that last jump doesn’t need run. That got me killed three times, mere centimeters from bandage girl (rage!).

The second screen sucks balls, but the only real hard part is weaving through the smaller spikes. It’s all timing and luck, but at least you get to rest your jump hand.

And you’ll need to rest it, because the third screen is pure, relentless, torture, of both body and mind. If you’re not jumping, you’re dead. If you don’t jump at the right time, you’re dead. If you don’t do anything, you’re dead. You’ll start to feel like Bill Murray in groundhog day, where he just stops caring and starts killing himself. The only thing I can say here is watch how someone else does it on youtube (especially how to transition from lower to upper tiers).

Not sure if it was worth it, but it’s done. If I can do it, you guys can, but as Beige said, you just need to be willing to bash your head into a wall over and over, and clear about 2-3 hours of your schedule for it. Also, having the IWBTG music or your own music in the background helps the morale, for a little while…

@feenwager sounds like we got similar receivers, although mine only has 5 HDMI ports. Works great though, takes my Wii’s component cables and upres’s it through the HDMI. 0 Swass. Onyoko make good receivers at a decent price, got mine w/speakers for $800 on a boxing day sale. Keep them in mind @beige I’ll check my model name when I get home, but I doubt its still available.

I’ve got both versions of Super Meat Boy @JeffGrubb, hit me up for comparison CptCarnage777 on xbla and CptCarnage on Steam.

Well, not that anyone cares, but two worlds at 100% and three? more to go in Super Meat Boy. I’m simultaneously developing an aneurysm and a hernia and also rapidly approaching the point at which this keyboard becomes completely useless. It’s nice to be reminded of that fact at the loading screen every time I boot the game. Can’t wait for the IWBTG stages. @cptcarnage You sir, are one fast meat mofo.

@unmanneddrone That music is shaping up nicely, however this track was notably absent.

@bowlisimo SMB is awesome and I will be flexing my skills with it tonight on the PC version. Though by the Steam achievement stats people are Hacking the game get bandages and unlock all of the associated characters ahead of time (20% have got all bandages it seems fishy in 24hours).

As for Aquaria, I’ve played a few hours of it and it is decent. Definitely an Ecco vibe to it w/a touch of Zelda and Metroid thrown in w/ocarina bits.

Yep, Super Meat Boy is friggen awesome, except my fingers hurt. Damn. So is Machinarium by the way, you guys were right. It’s nice to actually recognize all these unlockable SMB characters. It’s also good to see Naija getting some love for once. How many of us here have actually played Aquaria, btw? Consider it an indie shame game if you haven’t. Super Metroid meets… Echo the Dolphin?

Also, I’d be down for Assassin’s Read (Red Read Redemption?), but to my shame, I really don’t have a large repertoire of books to recommend, and more than likely, you’ve already read it. Unless you want me to dig into my preteen days and find you a nice Battletech novel. Either that or @feenwager becomes my designated recommender.

@bowlisimo I’ll be grabbing PC version as well for the extra characters.

He hasn’t said but by the looks of this silhouette and this description its probably safe to say that one of them is the Maw. My guess for the non organic one is the robot from Machinarium.

“”one of them sticks, one of them dashes, one of them changes form and one of them isn’t organic””

@beige the bandages are a fun thing to shoot for, most aren’t too bad, and some will have you scratch your head for 15 minutes thinking ‘How am I supposed to get there?’ (2-18 is a perfect example, the one with the lasers behind locks and a giant saw in the middle of the room.)

Oh and for the record, there’s a video on ustream of a guy going through that level, needless to say the first stage took him 25 minutes to get through. Total time to get The Guy was around an HOUR for 3 stages. The last one wasn’t too bad. I think the developers became merciful at that point (according to a podcast they were on they changed it at the last minute to make it EASIER).

@CptCarnage Oh yeah… I tried that first stage for over 30 minutes. Simply impossible – I can’t the hang of the timing needed. My jaw simply hit the floor when I saw that level.

@mjpilon @beige I too am stuck on world 5, just out of curiosity have you guys even attempted to get The Guy from ‘I want to be the Guy’?

That brings on a whole new meaning of pain…

Here’s the first of the 3 levels you have to complete to get him, his specialty is a double jump but he’s as fast as meat boy.

@Beige Well done with Super Meat Boy. You, Sir, are insane – I’m second behind you in level completed and as much I want to get closer to your totals, I feel completely powerless when I see your totals :p

This game is the first game in a while where competing with my friends’ scores is compelling me to go back and shave seconds off my times. It probably has to do with the fact that it’s the first game in my while that I bought right when it came out and so I know people are playing it right now. I have never spent so much time looking at leaderboards than I am now. Anyway, SMB is the kind of platforming game I love but ramped up to such an extreme. Level 5 is having its way with me at the moment and while I want to throw my controller at times, I keep coming back because it’s completely worth it. Those 30 minutes of frustration pay off in the end once you’ve completed the level. This isn’t anything you all don’t know at this point but I just wanted to re-emphasize how awesome this game is.

Because of some recent free time that has opened up in my life recently (taking away 25 hours of football a week will do that), I also finally got through Scott Pilgrim: the game on XBLA. This game hooked me from the first minutes with its art style and soundtrack. The game is a straight beat ’em up and is quite frustrating at times (the last boss drove me nuts for days) but worth every minute. The leveling mechanic is a nice addition which brings re-playability into it because frankly, if you don’t take the time to level up, you will get smacked around even on easy. I just wished the game had online multiplayer because I would love to play it with other people but no one in my proximity likes these games. Oh well…

@beige It annoyed me that some people on YouTube and elsewhere prefer Commander Video over Meat Boy. Meat Boy is the only way to go and if you don’t like it you are playing it wrong. The rooster tail of blood when he runs is so cute.

Oh and Dark Castle was awesome, there was a newer version released recently called Return to Dark Castle. Its Mac only sadly.

@beige Meat Boy is an addiction, I showed it to a friend the other day and he couldn’t stop laughing at my every death. He liked the game but he says he wouldn’t play it, its too masochistic He got discouraged within 5 minutes, then again I don’t think his platforming skills were up to snuff.

The weird thing is, I will not play a game on Hard mode for the extra challenge. What’s different about Super Meat Boy is its uninterrupted play. No par time is longer then 30 seconds and all of them can easily be completed in under a minute. I like the high stress, but only in small doses I suppose.

Also the retro worlds are a pain in the ass, Ogmo’s in particular had me screaming at my TV.

Initial impression of Super Meat Boy: Love the look and sound of the game, love the precision of the controls but dear god, this game will probably drive me up a wall. You will die incessantly but you’ll keep coming back for more. Brad’s play-through during the Giant Bomb quick look on this game is coming to life before my eyes.

    Regardless, highly recommended

@beige I grabbed it this morning before work, got about 5 levels in and loving it already. The leader board function’s cool.

In other news, SMB’s creator was talking with Notch (Minecraft) this morning and it seems like they are going to put the Minecraft guy in the PC version of SMB.
