I am still up for Squad Santa. Was awesome last year… especially in my case with @bowlisimo ‘s generosity 😉

Also, for my Canadian brethren, I want to mention that Double Fine just released their iOS game in our app store, Middle Manager of Justice. It is one of those free but with in-app transaction games but so far, I haven’t felt like you need to buy anything to enjoy the game yet.

Quick pitch: You are the manager of a superhero company branch. You manage, level up and motivate a staple of superheroes as you fight crime in the land. You select which heroes you send to combat each crime event. You can watch the fights in a action RPG system where you can provide extra support bonus/ directives or you can delegate ala Assassin’s creed assassins missions.

The game has a nice animated/ comic book style with the usual Double fine humor and wit – playing very strong on the office motif. Think it is worth a look

Many belated thanks to @rampantbicycle for her incredibly generous squadsanta gifts. I am incredibly excited to get started on them! On top of that I will play them while dipping fruit in a chocolate fountain my crazy uncle got me for christmas. Not just a fondue set … no … thats not good enough. I got a fountain of chocolate.

I will say that gifting things on GoG certainly is difficult, and certainly ruins the surprise :/

Tags: , Da Blob 2, Squad Santa,

As a small change of pace from Chrono Trigger (about 4 hours in and loving in so far), I got through De Blob 2 over the weekend. Ever since I watched the Giant Bomb quick look, I had always wanted to try it and I got a chance when it arrived in the mail from GameAccess (guess my hope for Saints Row 3 or Rayman Origins were squashed by Holiday vacations). Anyway, it’s a game that isn’t challenging in the least but still a enjoyable experience – mostly from a visual and audio point of view with some good humor bits sprinkled in.

As I went through the game, I was struck by something Patrick Klepek mentioned on last week’s BombCast regarding his play-through of Rayman Origins – how at some point the desire to collect all the side stuff falls off and you just decide to get through the game. I had that experience with this game. For about the 1st half, I went through each level and got EVERYTHING. Eventually, I got tired of putting in that effort and just went through level picking up what I could as I went about the main game objectives. Now, there was a time where I would compulsively go for 100% completion of platforming games of this nature but I find myself today no longer willing to do so. While at first I put it down to “this game probably isn’t worth that kind of effort”, I recognized that this feeling occurs for me even for the so-called AAA games (Batman, Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, Super Meat Boy, Mario). I guess the combination of too many games and too little time has changed me…. or maybe, in this infamous words of Roger Murtaugh: “I’m too old for this shit “. 😉

What say you my fellow Squaddies? I think some of you still partake in the 100%-ness, so maybe you can shed some light on how things have/ have not changed for you over the years…

Also, the Steam sale is really REALLY testing my resolve. I get the impression I will splurge heavily post-Secret Santa clearing out my wishlist :p

@bowlisimo (with sincere apologies to Mr. Dickens):

His colour changed though, when, without a pause, it came on through the heavy door, and passed into the room before his eyes. Upon its coming in, the dying flame leaped up, as though it cried, “I know him! Snake’s Ghost!” and fell again.

The same face: the very same. Snake with his bandana, usual octocamo, boots, and weaponry; the latter bristling, like the mullet upon his head. The chain he drew was clasped about his middle. It was long, and wound about him like a tail; and it was made (for Scrooge observed it closely) of forgotten consoles, controllers, keyboards, memory cards, strategy guides, and heavy joysticks wrought in steel. His body was transparent; so that Scrooge, observing him, and looking through his sneaking suit, could see the long strap of his utility belt behind.

“Snake,” said Scrooge, caustic and cold as ever. “Snake. SNAAAAAAKE!”

    (coughs) Right. Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

    Tags: Squad Santa, Ultima VII

What a splendid idea this santa business. Do count me in.

Been taking a short break from Skyrim. Re-playing another epic RPG .. Ultima VII.
There is a modification for it called Exult that I found, really helps it run on modern machines &adds features.
The game definitely looks dated, but it still impresses in the details. Grinding wheat, tossing in sugar, throwing in water…bake bake bake. Baking bread is the common example of the games unecessary level of detail. I love that the detail is there, even if I rarely find myself experimenting with it. The games massive number of manipulatable objects is pretty daunting, especially when you are just looking for one damn thing .. such as a key. Detail is also found in the daily routines of ordinary folk, impressive much the way that Oblivion’s ‘Radiant A.I’ was impressive 14 years later. So Ultima is a relevant jumping off point.
Obviously user friendliness has come a long way since then. I have already run into points where I couldn’t remember who to talk to about what in order to get things rolling, and finding myself stuck and in need of a walkthrough. Ultima games are horridly non-obvious, especially the ones with text based conversation.
It requires of you a form of patience, and sleuthing. Its to the point where I cannot recommend the game to any new parties without the extensive use of GameFAQ’s. Some of us are likely used to such form.
It has been a good trip into a game that has long stood as a landmark for me, and was certainly a basis for comparison in my Skryim adventures.

After years of talking about it, let’s finally start the yearly “Squad Santa” tradition. This will be a great way to endulge in some holiday spirit with our fellow Squaddies for $15 or less.

Our cheap fu is very strong…

    Here’s how it works:

    • State your interest to participate here by Sunday, December 11th..
    • Send your Steam name and email address to me at: chris [dot] whittington [at] gmail [dot] com.
    • Stock up your Steam and/or GOG “wish lists” so that the person who gets your name will know what you want.
    • On Monday, December 12th, a non-participant (Mrs. RocGaude) will unanimously draw one name from a hat for each participant.

…and that’s it. Please be sure to have all gifts sent out by January 1st!

Note: We recommend sticking to Steam and/or GOG when gifting. Shipping costs suck.

    Happy gifting!

      Yep, I’m in.

I’d like to add that you can totally ignore a wishlist if you’re confident enough. Surprises are good.

Also, it looks like you can buy Microsoft space bucks over Amazon and get a game code there. Just in case you get @feenwager.

    • unmanneddrone 11:13 pm on December 6, 2011 Permalink

I’m in, but the issue with Steam and whatnot is it doesn’t accept card details when I’m ordering, due to being outside of the country of account registration. So…I dunno…I might have to resort to airmail or something. My goods and chattels usually are the product of a pan-Pacific trade system, so it skips the card issues.

Still, will do my best or see what I can dig up.

My wonderful Squad Santa (the one and only @unmanneddrone) bought me an actual thing and sent it around the planet, how’s that for awesome? The package was ringed with an ancient Eastern script that could only be brought out by the precise, windy coldness of Connecticut in December, and the grimey gloves of a US Postal worker. I have no idea what it said, but I’m sure it was sage and profound.

@bowlisimo Steam’s pretty much our best bet regarding the gifting of downloadable games. The iTunes Marketplace is a headache when dealing with different countries and gifting via XBL and PSN is non-existant (if my memory serves me correctly).

Just to make this easy, I say that anyone who wants to be in the “Squad Santa” group should post their desire here (I’ll make a sticky), post their Steam account name, and have their Steam “wish list” filled up with stuff to choose from. Does that work for you all?

EDIT: We should also use GOG.com. Their system works great, too.

Cool. I haven’t really thought it through, but if you guys want to do this I suppose @angryjedi could start a separate Squad Santa thread here or a Google doc? (for securely collecting emails, gamertags, steam names, etc) for people to officially add their name to over the next week or two if they want to participate (I realize that not everyone can, or wants to). Then one of us can randomly dole out the names and people can get to gifting, and post what they got if they so desire. A logical end date would be Jan 1st, to catch holiday sales.

I figure that gifting downloadable games would be an easy way to start, but we can shape this however we want, especially since we’re a small group.

Cheap fu is strong these days and there’s a veritable bounty out there to be had for next to nothing. 15 dollars max or whatever your equivalent currency is, should be more than enough. Steam is obvious and easy to gift with, even across different countries, but I’m not sure about PSN or XBL or iOS. Is it even possible to gift games on those services?

@shingro A good way to do that without asking is read through old posts here, or stalk their game lists and wish lists if available, which are usually public.

    Thoughts, ideas?

I definitely respect the Squad Santa idea. I was just throwing around some Xmas cheer, but having the whole squad do so would be pretty neat. We might need a bit more awareness of each other’s likes/dislikes etc.
