@bowlisimo Oh man I know what you mean. Mad kof’s play was like watching a performance art. From the technical side the precision of the pokes and the evasive teleport cancels to regain or alter the spacing of the match was mind blowing. From the spectator side the way that one match where they traded perfects of first characters and especially the reverse OCV that Bala pulled out near the end of the set was crazy. Even if you didn’t know the game the KoF finals were probably the best concentration of EVO moments this year. =D

There was this moment after the reset when Bala just wandered the character select screen back and forth for almost a full minute. He was a broken man then and even someone who didn’t know anything about fighting games could see it

Then for him to pull it together from that state for the reverse OCV was insane =D Great times. I worked most of the weekend so I’m still going over the archives. Legend has it SCV finals were Cervantes vs Tira o_O how crazy is that? =D

(for anyone who wants to poke at the archives they’re http://www.twitch.tv/srkevo1/videos and http://www.twitch.tv/srkevo2/videos respectively, (sub streams were http://www.twitch.tv/8wayrun and http://www.twitch.tv/xiei for Virtua Fighter and Anime fighters respectively)

@redswir1 Of course! If you’re up for some practice I’d love to get some matches with you =) just set a time and place~

@cptcarnage My problem is that I still need a computer to work on, and I can’t do that on a TV. I still need something with a screen two feet from my face. My choices are either get a laptop and turn my current system into an HTPC, or get a new gaming HTPC and relegate my old one to a work desktop. I’m choosing the latter because a new gaming HTPC would probably be less expensive than a powerful laptop, and because my Q6600 probably won’t be as useful a year from now. Don’t know if I’m gonna be able to do anything on account of joblessness though. My ultimate hope would be able to play a lot of the games coming out later this year on an HTPC. I’m also holding back on a lot of my current games (like Skyrim) until I can play them on such a setup.

@shingro I’m gonna be practicing my Soul Calibur V all month. Anyone else on the Squad play it on PSN?

Grand =) Another otaku joins the mix, those are some pretty old school line things, but quite respectable among The People *eyebrow*

… anyway! Great to have you aboard! =)

In my own personal gaming I just got into the slow part of the year, so I’ll be back to being able to sink more seriously into RPGs, most of my gaming has been Soul Calibur V actually o_O made top 8 at the Anime Central tourney, but still need to put in a lot more work before Youmacon =P especially since apparently the FGC is putting together a full out event named Youmacon Battle Opera (after Super Battle Opera from japan) which is to say…. a full hosted event D:

    We’ll see! =)

@pete Son of a…… well… I’m in, Bahamut have mercy on my soul c_c I fell off the Emi track and I gotta get back on now that all the school pressure is coming off me and the weather of warming or she’ll sniffle at me and I will cease to live :/

Soul Calibur 5 training continues apace, I dressed Asteroth up in a giant kitten Kigarumi and gave him a jaunty lace hat to try to suppress the testosterone dominance thing that his gameplay seems to inspire, it’s been met with limited success c_c. On the other hand I got a PS3 to Xbox converter on it’s way, so I will no longer suddenly be ass on other systems… Hurrah!

Also, 6 days left in the Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1613260297/shadowrun-returns Seriously, X-com type combat in a shadowrun world? It has the potential to be the only game I ever really wanted =P (from the west)

The semester might be ending so everything is going crazy, but I still have a brief moment to pop in and mention that the Soul Calibur 5 world championship is happening tomarrow ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuKxgaWAd6w trailer) this is the stream http://www.own3d.tv/teamspooky time is 7pm PST but there will probably be an archive of it.

Can’t really offer too much insider information on this one, in brief: Tira got about 1 and a half pages of nerfs last patch so I’m curious what version the UK qualifiers used (patch came in 2 days before the US qualifiers I know) If he managed to win under so many fresh nerfs that’s amazing.

ZWEI got some minor buffs but you still don’t see him often, odd to see him in the finals too

Though NoFaceKiller is listed as an Ivy player and tends to start tournaments with her when he gets serious he plays nightmare, that’s also who he won his Grand Finals with at NCR.

Keev from France is the favorite to win, but no matter how much Nightmare is considered the best in the game, players get a ton of matchup experience against him and if anyone can exploit that, it’d be the world’s top 8 players =P

Excited to watch it! (even if I’m going to have to be writing a paper at the same time c_c)

Oh man @cgrajko totally beat me to the Shadowrun returns news, good on ya! I know I ponied up my cash without a second thought =) can’t wait to see all the great stuff (or at least old) stuff that comes out of kickstarter

been crazy busy recently, lots of 1/2 sleep nights I’m afraid so I haven’t had much chin-strokey time but I got a few scattershot things, Playing SMT: Strange Journey for DS, and it is completely that old school SNES style SMT game, it’s also 15$ at gamestop so good times all around, only 8 hours in despite the days (see aformentioned busy complaining =P) but it seems pretty great so far, can’t wait to see where the weird splits come out, I’ll probably get into it more later

Speaking of old SNES games, does anyone remember Dungeon Master? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dLdoy0q2Gc ? Well allow me to suggest Legend of Grimrock coming out on GoG? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPuzj1xhlQ8 comes out April 11th, preorder to drop the $15 tag to $12.

Phyrra Omega is adorable even if she’s a crazy soul devourer ❤ new main? maybe, she's got tons of great guard damage and high return for what she lands. Good stuff

One of the papers I'm writing had be dredge up old memories of SimEarth for SNES, that game was kinda rad. Really teaches you a lot of science completely by accident. Good for the nerdy kid, wonder how it holds up now that I actually have some idea of what changing the atmospheric gasses will do?

Aaaaaaa!! I'm late already! :/ Good luck out there squaddies

Holy shit Mass Effect talk. That’s actually what’s been taking up most of my time the last month or so.

I must be weird because I’ve spent like 130 hours on ME1 through four playthroughs, the last of which I just finished up around a week ago. The reason however may be because I beat ME2 when it came out, took an almost two-year break, and then started back on ME1 with a second character. I’m kind of rediscovering the games.

ME1 for me is one of those games that definitely feels janky in most areas, but is still tolerable because somewhere in there the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts. I think it’s probably the characters and writing that sold me on the package, but I was even able to put up with the Mako, repeating environments, and combat (I play on PC though, where those things were supposedly improved).

Starting out ME2 now, I think it’s better in every way except exploration and combat. Well, the combat is different, but I don’t know if it’s better. Yeah it’s more shooter-ey, but since the game was still made by an RPG house, you can tell it’s not quite there. It’s the same as when any RPG developer tries to make a hack n’ slash button-to-action RPG – most of the time it’s missing something from either side. Looking back to ME1, I actually like that while it controls like a shooter, still knows it’s an RPG. I liked how victory depended more on proper use of abilities and stats rather than just taking cover.

Still, ME2 was my favorite game of 2010 primarily for its roleplaying element. That’s the part that still made it feel like a great RPG for me. I wish someone could try to make whole games out of the type of stuff you do in Thane’s and Samara’s loyalty missions.

@shingro You doin’ Soul Calibur V on PS3? I am available for that game on PSN.

I’ll agree that the singleplayer plot is freaking retarded in that game. I think the main director got caught complaining on twitter that Namco was rushing the game, so they probably just decided to focus on the core competitive aspect.

@redswirl I dunno, dyson power? I think a full squadcast showing up from it coming together last minute had something to do with it

As for tonight’s adventures, I can say that Soul Calibur V is absolutely a game made for competitive play. this ISN’T a recommendation necessarily. Single player is incredibly sparse, story is crazytime, it’s best features are
    1. Training mode is amazingly flexible in testing specific scenarios, randomizing certain programmable movesets which permits recognition training of mixups, setups and Ukemi traps
    2. Very balanced, we won’t know for a few month’s yet but I can’t think of anyone besides the mimics who ‘cannot compete’
    3. Simplified movesets and revamped engine makes things extremely percise, movelists are smaller, but a larger % of moves are ‘functional’ large changes to the Guard Impact systems encourage ‘exciting’ play (more offense, mixups and traps, no more Step-A battles and such)

All these items are based around things like ‘improving your game’ and ‘an even match of strength’ and suchlike. If that sounds great, then by all means roll in and take a look, but if you like just going story-modes and suchlike, skip it, they really didn’t put much attention there.

Also: Squadcast yaaaaaay~ poor Mike 😀 This is all part of my Devious Plan to liberate Rin you know c_c (but naw, I think I’ll stick with Emi, she’s probably better for me, consider this my peace offering c_c)

Perhaps now that it’s actually out I will stop obsessing over all the things I forgot to say or said wrong (my favorite is I’m pretty sure I said Urotsukidoji when I ment Utawarerumono! Ha! Haha! It’s… it’s funny ’cause… uh…. y-you see… um… w-wh…. where is everyone going… ¬_¬

I hope people will forgive me my nervous vocal ticks =P I gotta say, I have a far greater respect for people who are able to go on a recording and just sound like it ‘ain’t no thang~’ so to speak.

Also: a Katawa Shoujo thread sounds like it might be handy now that there is a podcast for it. It doesn’t exactly have any problem with exposure, plus it’ll help blunt the chilling effect of the minor recent drama and the normal social pressures that normally encourage people to remain silent on the topic of ‘the feels’. My end game goal for everything ever is for people to bring as much of themselves as they can to whatever discussion is at hand. When that happens it is, in a word. Rad.
