Fellows of the Squawk, may I just direct your attention this way for a moment. In a word, Teleglitch.

I’m reviewing this sucker at the moment, and it’s a corker. Imagine if Quake was a top-down survival horror shooter with roguelike sensibilities. And had a crafting-lite system. Teleglitch is essentially that. It’s a nice little piece of indie excellence and I highly recommend anyone who reckons the above sounds luvverly to dig in for the asking price of thirteen clams. A challenging, cold and satisfying thing.

It lacks a soundtrack, so augment your play with something interesting. I went with Stars of the Lid and it was phenomenally sad, watching my little bloke dismally try to find his way to the teleporter with rapidly depleting health…cobbling together nails and his old ration cans to make nailbombs (get behind something when these go off!), scratching around for shotgun ammunition and being cornered and slain by biological entities in this offworld base gone Island of Dr. Moreau. The crafting system, incidentally, is very slick. Combine tubing with plastic explosives to create a one-use Panzerfaust…hardware modules and pistol to create an SMG…rather spiffy.

Quite a tense and bleak experience. Might have to throw a little drum and bass at it for the next play session. Roni Size Reprazent…on Medusa 1-C. That’s well wikkid, innit.

    Oh, and there’s a demo.

    Hello friends,

I know have been MIA for a while, busy times and I just recieved a 5 day holiday (it’s the last day of Ramadan today and Eid follows) so I got a good chunk to do the things I wanna do. Lately I’ve been playing Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey on the DS but keep going and coming back on Valhalla Knights on PSP (actually, playing it on the Vita, found it for like $6 on a sale, which I think is still going on), VK didn’t get much praise critically, being it is kinda unpolished. It is a proper dungeon crawler with a more traditional RPG approach, the way it presents itself however sort of gave me a flashback to something missing in games nowadays.

I wonder if any of you played any of the Tobal series, Ehregeiz or a Japan-only title known as Abala Burn. I don’t predates it, but there was a handful roguelike side modes in some PS1 fighting games coming from RPG developers (Square-Enix, Tamsoft, etc.), these modes probably could have been my earliest experience with roguelikes as a kid.

    (gameplay starts at 2:00)

I’ve been kinda wondering, why don’t they make these anymore? Or at least, has there been any notable ones in recent date? I would sure love to play one if there are any. I guess Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls could be a fair candidate as a full game of that kind of thing, but I’m thinking of something more randomly generated.

@shingro The Mixing Bowl of Personality sounds incredible! Something created by Terry Gilliam and overseen by Eric Idle.

I’m playing my first roguelikes since, gulp, Yoda Stories (can that be considered a roguelike?) in Doom II RPG on iOS. Not bad, certainly enjoying it in limited amounts. The Steve Irwin Line Of Obviousness (pre-calamitous run-in with ray) in “If I wasn’t alive right now, I’d be dead!” certainly feels right at home in the binary world of a roguelike.

@Beige Can’t you play Torchlight in permadeath mode? Also, its levels are randomly generated. The main difference between it and a traditional roguelike is real-time vs. turn-based.

    Edit: Roguelike recommendations

    Dungeons of Dredmor (Steam)
Tales of Maj’Eyal (formerly Tales of Middle Earth)
    100 Rogues (iOS)
    Sword of Fargoal (iOS)
    Rogue Touch (iOS)

Check out RogueBasin for more than you would ever possibly want to know on the subject.

    Edit 2:

DoomRL is amazing. As is the Castlevania roguelike.

@Pete Roguelikes are a pretty big blind spot of mine. Be gentle.

@Redswirl I wonder if Steam will have another Perils of Summer sale this year, although I still haven’t finished the ones from last year.

Here’s an interesting one for you: a roguelike where you play an alcoholic. http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/Broken_Bottle You’re welcome!

Just so you know, I WILL be pushing for a roguelike mission at some point. 🙂
