Great post, @rampantbicycle. I mostly agree. I don’t think you should look down on someone for enjoying what they enjoy, although I do think hating on books like Twilight and 50 Shades for the way they portray women and relationships is totally legitimate.

Totally unrelated: Is anyone planning to pick up Payday within the next 26 hours? It’s been on my radar for a while, but I’m not sure it’s worth buying without friends to play with. The 4pack is $15 in today’s daily deals. Anyone wanna go in with me?

@Sinfony Oh well, that game has co-op in it too.

How about some co-op bank robbery for $5? http://www.amazon.com/Sony-40814Y-The-Heist1-Download/dp/B005QF1OSG/ref=br_lf_m_1000812791_1_8_ttl?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&pf_rd_p=1375632942&pf_rd_s=center-5&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000812791&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0MDW51XYGP9HS3B8YQVY

    Yo.

PAYDAY (PC version) is $5 at GameFly right now. It’s Steamworks. I’ve already talked a little about it here but the game basically lies somewhere between Left 4 Dead, Heat, and The Town. Violent bank robberies gone horribly wrong. I think it’s worth a shot at that price if you can round up a team.

I think there’s gonna be a four-pack on Amazon for $15 in a few days though. Not srue.

The entire Ghost Recon franchise (well, every released PC version) is on the low on Steam right now too to hype up Future Soldier. Crap like this is why PC is ahead of even Live on the service end. What’s stopping Rockstar from putting Max Payne 1 and 2 on sale on XBL right now to hype up MP3?

Just in regards to PAYDAY: The Heist, this was the video RockPaperShotgun linked to in their story on the game’s free weekend. It shows the crazy semi-arcade team requirement needed to get the most out of the game. There’s a tinge of pained Bro’ey commentary, but they do a grand job of explaining what’s going on.

    Underdog experience.

@redswir1 Man, just tried out PAYDAY after reading your post. I like it! I’d nabbed the demo on PSN a while back, but never ended up playing it. It’s pretty frantic in a semi-L4D way, and I like the tone it’s going for. Agree wholeheartedly you need a team who know what they’re doing to enjoy the full extent, and I imagine if you’ve a few Squaddies who know how to fully “invest”, if you will, in the experience – much like the NMRiH mod – it’d be a Heat by way of Guy Richie kinda thing. Love The Town, but those guys are too professional. This is a real smash and grab operation. Thematically, I dig it the same way I dig Kane & Lynch. A nice and raw walk on the wild side.

I don’t know if ass-a-clock on a Saturday night is the right time to post this, but I played a couple games of PAYDAY: The Hest which is going through a free weekend as well as a half-off weekend deal (making it $10 as of this typing). I didn’t expect it to be so… video gamey, but I think it might have potential if you go into it with guys who know their shit.

Now I see how stupid I was to expect an interactive representation of what Ben Afflec was doing in The Town. I mean, it actually starts off slow and cerebral – you actually have to case the bank first. You gotta find the manager whose position is randomized, and you can control the moment when you take out your guns and yell “EVERYBODY DOWN!”

From there on our though it’s kind of Horde mode but with objectives. This is not a clean, already-fully-planned, in-and-out professional operation. You will kill an army of cops who come down in different enemy types, have to restart a drill that acts up, and grab money like points. The voice acting is also stuck somewhere in the late 90’s. This is hot a heist sim. It’s a video game about heists. But somewhere in that video game is still the sense of “we pulled this shit off together”.

Maybe it get’s a lot less sloppy the higher the player skill level. Before we pulled out guns we should have probably confirmed the location of the drill, thermite, and manager, and split those objectives up. You can tell that a skill-based team game is in there somewhere, but it was obviously built so that the sloppy layman can get through.

Sort on-the-subject, I just saw a kickstarter program that I really want to succeed: Someone is trying to resurrect the hardcore tactical shooter.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/355932838/crowdsourced-hardcore-tactical-shooter

It’s a new dev called Serallen LLC. The head guy worked on Halo Reach and most of the Ghost Recon games, and he wants to do something more like the original GR and the earlier Rainbow Six games. It got about $2,000 in two hours and they need something like $20,000 in the next month so it’s looking pretty good.

Nobody would ever be down for Payday would they? It’s one of the daily deals.

Does anybody, have any interest whatsoever in Payday? Because it’s out now. Steam and PSN, and I believe it is cross-platform.

Another reminder about PAYDAY: The Heist guys. It just went up for pre-purchase on Steam, and I really hope this game doesn’t get buried.

Basically, it’s a Sony Online game that’s like L4D except instead of escaping zombies you’re robbing a bank. A part of me hopes I get to do it with the opening theme from The Dark Knight playing in the background.

Being from SOE, there’s going to be a PS3 version as well.

Just read a Q&A on Payday: The Hest over at the PlayStation Blog. It’s basically Left 4 Dead + The Town (or the first five minutes of The Dark Knight if you prefer). There will also be a Windows version, it being a Sony Online Entertainment game.

Highlights include things like how you actually have to case the bank before you actually begin the robbery, trading hostages, and the ability to conduct entire heists through stealth. You’ll have to deal with guards, cameras, lasers, trading hostages, etc.

I think I’m all in on this one.

Have we all caught wind of Payday: Heist? Looks like a good one for a Squad game night when it releases later this summer.
