It’s good to see MNC getting post-launch support. Looks like this may wind up being a Squad Night staple. I Ggess I’ll still be able to play with you guys past October after all.

Looks like some really great support is coming the way of MNC. I’m looking forward to our next round!

So…do I have to be the asshole to bring up the XBox Live Subscription Hike, or is that not squad-worthy?

    Morning all!

@mcstabwithlies Up for Frozen Synapse when you grab it. I hear the first single player campaign section is being trialled at Mode 7 HQ…should be very cyberpunk’ey.

@angryjedi Yeah, a nice big bouncy DD lifestyle! I guess I was referring to “Direct Download”, after getting roasted by some panty-waist keyboard warrior on GAF for daring to make the mistake of listing Lead & Gold as DLC, rather than DD. After that, it kinda stuck. But stick with the buxom luvverlies, by all means.

@beige Thanks for the MNC rundown. Love hearing After Action Reports, in any way, shape or form.

Hoping there’s a few Squaddies who’re willing to pick up Dungeon Defenders on PSN down the line, it’d be nice to get in on the action with the SoS in any capacity. Also, Playstation Plus finally paid for itself last night after leaving me feeling like its a colossal waste of time – the RUSE demo was available for subscribers. And when I get home tonight, I hope to write a short snippet here on just how amazing it is! Graphically, no prize-winner, but console realtime strategy has a coming-of-age tale within this WWII romp.

    Have a great night/day, folks.

I rather enjoyed the glitchtastic 10 minute battle that, despite being up 3 players most of the time, we still somehow managed to lose!

For what it’s worth, I’ll be on again tonight, although probably not as late. Maybe around…8pm EST?

Man, when it rains it pours on the Squawkbox.

I can’t make it tonight for MNC, but I played yesterday, and God I love this game. You have so many tools at your disposal, there’s almost always a way to get out of a tight spot if you’re quick on your feet. Yesterday, I managed to take out two Supports, both using armor endorsements, and their upgraded firebases with clever use of my Assault’s grenade launcher and bombs.

As of now, Wednesday and Thursday both work fine for me.

I’d really like to see how the experience evolves when you’re actually communicating with your team.

To expand on UMD’s topic, I think you have to mention Too Human as well. That game was going to be the next big thing, and it was awful. Awful awful awful.

As for games that I’d love to see get another shot? AfterLife. Maybe even with motion controls.

@Scribl You’re not playing with the right groups, man. If people use a strategy, the games can be really, REALLY fast. Embarassingly so. I played a fair amount on the weekend and played a number of matches where we dominated but also got absolutely dominated in a few others as well. If people playing, know what to do and when to do it…and where regarding choke points for the bots, etc…the games can be pretty darn quick.

Still playing MNC here. I’m really enjoying it, but I have complaints.

    1. It’s too hard to win. Evenly matched games shouldn’t always go into Overtime. On the other hand, when one team is dominating, they should be able to win before Overtime.

The worst is being on a team that’s clearly far inferior, knowing that there’s no way to win, yet still having to play out the match until it hits OT, because the other team just can’t break through your turtle.

I think part of the problem might be how close the spawn point is to the money ball. Or maybe the respawn timer should be longer. I don’t know.

    2. Some classes just don’t do well on certain maps, and by the time you realize this, you’ve already dumped over a thousand dollars into your skills. It’d be great if you could transfer your investment—or maybe just a part of it—when you switch classes.

I guess this’ll get better once I learn the arenas, but it’s really frustrating to be pretty much confined to my base all game long because I made the mistake of choosing Gunner on a map that caters to Snipers.

I have some minor, class-specific complaints (e.g., Assassin’s smoke bomb is almost useless), but those two are the biggies.

I started playing Monday Night Combat (online, with randoms) at 1:30am. It’s now almost 5am.

    Well, shit.

PS: Would love to get on with some Squaddies some time.

edit: Just scrolled down and realized you guys were talking about MNC too. Yay, I’m relevant!

@sinfony, I get what you mean about TF2, but with MNC’s smaller teams, I feel like my contribution is a lot more apparent. It’s also less chaotic.

Although, if you’d asked me after my first few games, I’d totally agree. I played Assassin and didn’t pay any attention to the greater battle. Assassins are pretty useless at assaulting the enemy base, so I just ran around stabbing people until one team won.

Then I started playing around with different classes and gradually gained a better grasp on the ebb and flow of the matches. It helps to pay attention to the map when you’re respawning. It shows the locations of both teams’ bots and turrets, which is usually a good indication of who’s pushing the attack and who’s defending.

@unmanneddrone I’m pretty sure there’s a demo for Pure out there. The Split/Second guys are the one who made Pure, actually.

Oh, and can I get an amen for Monday Night Combat?! @tolkoto and I gave the trial a shot the other night and I bought it immediately. I’d somehow missed the fact that the game is basically TF2 + tower defense + great humor. I also like that there are both co-op and competitive modes.

Just thought I’d offer my initial thoughts on Monday Night Combat for anyone that might be on the fence about dropping 15 bones or clams or whatever you call them.

First things, first. Monday Night Combat is a tower defense game, and UberEnt makes no bones about it. Your primary objective, at least in Crossfire (the only mode worth playing), is to attack the other persons “Money Ball” (or tower) while defending yours. What makes this a lot more fun than a standard tower defense game, is that it’s also a deathmatch-style, third-person, class-based shooter. The classes all seem fun to play, and while the Assassin currently seems a bit overpowered, UberEnt apparently has a system in place that will allow them to tweak balance settings without having to patch the game, so this can all be done on the fly.

I told myself I would only sit down for about an hour and play last night, and four hours later, was wondering where the time had gone. It definitely seems like the type of game that would benefit from two things:
    1) Playing with people you know
    2) Being in communication with those people

Unfortunately, I was playing with strangers and didn’t feel like talking to 12 year olds who dropped “jew” and the n-bomb like they’re common vernacular, so I avoided xbl chat like the plague. Being able to have a set strategy would definitely give a team an advantage.

I lied. I did get a chance to play the “Horde Mode” of the game. It’s fun, but not as fun as Crossfire.

Some things I didn’t like about the game?
    1) 24 hours had gone by from the day it was released and when I started. Getting into my first match, I was paired up with 9 guys that were level 20+. I was 0. The match-making system doesn’t seem to be too good right now, but the good news is that this is the type of game that doesn’t punish you TOO much for lack of play. I was able to hold my own for most of the games, even coming in second place once or twice.

    2) I realize this is an XBLA game, but the graphics on a 1080P TV were a little subpar. If that’s not something you’re really concerned with, then don’t worry about it.

    What I liked about it?
    1) There’s a very nice “Pick up and play” style of game play. There’s a brief tutorial that drops knowledge about the mechanics that are distinct, and then you’re right in the action

    2) The announcer never gets annoying, and seems to add to the flavor of the game. It’s explained early on that you’re just a clone, there to entertain the people. He never makes you feel like an actual player, and you get the impression that you’re just a clone.

    3) As I said before, I never once felt out-classed and out-matched, even after my initial thoughts of “Shit…I’m a 0 in a group of 20’s. I’m going to get smoked.”

I also have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how much this game made me enjoy tower defense. I was never a big fan of “Plants vs. Zombies” or any other tower defense game, but I really don’t mind it.

In the end, this game will only be as good as you want it to be, but I would definitely say it’s deserving of the accolades that it’s currently receiving. It’s a great $15 game, and even if I only play it for a month, I feel like I’ll be getting my money’s worth.

Looking forward to playing with everyone!

Edit: Just bought it. Now to download it when I get home.

Edit #2: M$’s points system is screwed up. I had 1160 points. Could I buy 40 so that I could even out and buy MNC? NOOOOOO. Lame. Started with 360, ended with 360. Wait…360…

So, Monday Night Combat is actually a Tower Defense game? I guess I should have done my research before getting excited about it. I think I’m still going to pick it up though.

What catches my eye? Eurogamer describing it as “…a multiplayer version of Plants vs. Zombies combined with Gears of War’s Horde mode…”
