@Redswirl I’ve played LoL for almost 3 years now and not paid a dime so I’ll hijack your question there. Way it works is there’s in game currency and real currency, a selection of 10 or so heroes of the 70+ heroes in there are free for a week or two week span, every match you play you get in game currency (Influence Points) based on how long the match took. Victories tend to net you about 100 losses about 50, First win of the day nets you about 300, then you can buy heroes you really like to play as permanent “can use regardless of what roster is free this week” members of your stable. prices range from 540 for more basic heroes to 6300 for more complicated heroes. Also, all new heroes are basically 6300,

Now if you have RP (Riot points, or real currency, it’s not 1 to 1) you can buy heroes for 140 (on sale) to 975 (I think is what it costs for a 6300 hero)

So they net money because if you want to get every new hero (and plenty of people do) you gotta supplement your normal IP with RP or you gotta play sunup to sundown. no adds no anything and you can get a sizable hero roster off of 540 and 1350 cost heroes.

Also they make skins which can only be bought with RP, so lets take for example… Annie…

One of the first mage heroes ever, little girl pyromancer with a giant flaming teddy bear summon named Tibbers, pretty rad all things considered… buuuuut, would you drop a few dollars for Reverse Annie?

I know I’ve been very close to doing that just so I can type silly things like “GAAAAAAOOO!!! >:E” into the /All chat when I’m on kill streaks. =P

Also: Credit to LoL for showing some monstergirl love too, they’ve got a ninetails (Ahri) and a Naga (Cassiopia) not bad! =)

No ads, no gimmicks, just a solid game, though to be fair, in their early days IP flowed a bit freer, so maybe I’d feel differently if I didn’t have a few full rune pages of different build options

@shingro Yeah, I’ve heard League of Legends has the least awful community of the DOTA games. We should organize a squad night. : )

Sorry I haven’t been around lately, I’m trying to decide if I should change my area of study and thus my mind has been entirely occupied with my impending decision on whether to re-educate into networking and security rather then programming, completely unsure -_-

    A few thoughts though!

Free to play: awesome, would love to play some Spiral Knights, I’ll have to disconnect my router though, so I don’t have a lot of practice

Frozen Synapse: I suck, soooo hard at this game, it’s like my guys have forgotten how to use their fingers

City of Heroes: turned a ton of D&D characters into people on there. good fun, there are some WONDERFUL custom missions in their mission creator, if you’re willing to look past the grind missions, sort by stars and read some reviews. You should find the best grind missions then the best story missions under them

League of Legends: I’ve actually been playing LoL since a friend of mine got me into the beta, I’d be quite pleased to teach any Squadies the ins and outs of the game. While I agree that there are dicks in the community, it’s actually probably the least dickish of the MOBA games, and that was before they instituted the Tribunal which allows players to sit in judgement of reported players conduct, which has reduced dickishness by at least 60%, or at least, outright dickishness.

Anywho, feel free to add my main account “Shingro” or my smurf account “Nyxling” and drop me a message if you’d like some training =)

@angryjedi I’ve been thinking about giving LoL a try. One of my best friends from high school is all about Heroes of Newerth, but I hear LoL is more accessible and the community is a little nicer. Plus, it’s free, whereas I think you pay $30 for HoN.

The great thing about these F2P MMOs is that there’s no price barrier to entry, so yeah, I’d be up for trying out Spiral Knights some time. Why not?

I played Champions Online when it was in beta, and it didn’t really turn me on. Tried the F2P version a few days ago, and I quit before finishing the tutorial. It’s not for me.

But yeah, let me know if you guys want to hop on Vindictus some time. My only character is a Lann, dual-wield sword guy, called Utivich (yeah, I just saw Inglorious Basterds :).

@scribl @unmanneddrone Vindictus looks impressive. Am downloading now — 2.5GB. If anyone else decides to play, give me a shout.

I also tried League of Legends last night. That looks like fun, though @unmanneddrone says that the community is notoriously dickish. I haven’t played another real person yet so I can’t comment, but similarly, if anyone wants to try their hand at that sometime, hit me up.

@zegolf: Add me to your LoL friends list, Cyranix. I’m at Summoner Lvl 23 or so, I don’t have all the champions and have no runes whatsoever. I play with the Gamers With Jobs crew mostly, but I’ve always got time for Squaddies.

@RedSwirl: Just this week I was challenged to describe Shadow of the Colossus to some friends, coworkers of mine who are married to each other. I can’t give you an entertaining response to your question like NeoGAF might, but for what it’s worth: I stay away from any remotely technical language (“first person shooter”, “RPG”, etc.) and stick to 1) the important details about character and plot, 2) an overview of what the player does to make progress in the game, and 3) the emotion that the game evokes. So for SotC, I described the beauty of the desolation, the awe-inspiring sensation of scaling monumental beasts, the implied backstory of Wander, and so forth.

I started playing League of Legends (and by started, I mean, went through the tutorial). It’s pretty neat, but I have a feeling I’m going to get my ass kicked. Badly.

And speaking of underrated (someone said it, sometime), I picked up “You’re in the Movies” from my Target tonight. It was $14 for the bundle (camera alone retails for $35). That game is actually a lot of fun. I’m sure I’ll get tired of making dry humping motions and watching myself, but it seems like a good “have a few drinks with friends and break out a game” game.
