If we’re gonna do the top of 2010 thing I’d rather just have you guys mosey over onto the blog post I did on the subject on New Year’s Eve: http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9067615

    I couldn’t do a top 10, just a top 5.

    1) Mass Effect 2: I could’ve played this shit and nothing else all year, but that wouldn’t have been fair for hte other games we’re mentioning here.

    2) Bayonetta: Don’t car what anybody else says about the story or the character, the GAME was fun as shit. End of story.

    3) Fallout New Vegas: It’s just nice to have more Fallout I guess.

    4) Red Dead Recemption: The first Rockstar open-world game that didn’t piss me off.

    5) Super Mario Galaxy 2: Fun: the game.

Giant Bomb’s cavalcade of incredibly entertaining “best of 2010” podcasts have left me wanting for nothin’ over the holidays. If you’re looking for a suitable replacement for our “lost episode”, look no further.

As for my best gaming memories of 2010, here goes:

Mass Effect 2: When my Shepard completed the final, casualty-free encounter by making a mad leap into Joker’s outstretched hand, I high-fived my family as if I had won the Super Bowl. When my typical response after finishing a game is either “…aaaaand done”, “really?”, and/or “fuck this game”, that’s special.

Red Dead Redemption: John Marston is hands-down the best character I’ve ever controlled for 30 hours straight. Rock Star (of all developers) made a truly mature game that I enjoyed every minute of.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit: @angryjedi and @cptcarnage are some cheatin’ muthafuckas. That said, I haven’t had this much fun with a racing game since…hmmmm, oh yeah…Criterion’s last game. I like those guys.

Bayonetta: Man, did they make that girl move in ways that dripped confidence and charm. Sex as a weapon? Hell yeah it is and no other studio proved their point as meticulously as Platinum.

    On to my current spin…

AC: Brodeo is proving to be a solid continuation of AC2. Still, I’m scratching my head as to why some things are actually worse then the last game. I can’t count how many times I’ve hopped into a battle and had more trees in my face then anything else. Does anyone else struggle with the camera?

It’s whoring time! My illustrious brother and my marginally less-illustrious self were both on the MobCast this week alongside Shoe and Brett Bates. We had a good chat about all manner of stuff and I think you guys will dig it. Here’s the show description straight from the horse’s mouth:

In this episode of the Mobcast, Britain invades! Freelancer Pete Davison and his well-known brother, GameSpot and Metacritic VP John Davison, join Bitmob’s Dan Hsu and Brett Bates. The group discusses their early contenders for game of the year, genres and tropes that have fallen by the wayside, how younger people approach the medium, whether reviews should focus on product evaluation or art critique, and how the U.S. and the U.K. approach games differently.

Wanna know what I think is one of the most amazing things about my gaming experience in 2010? Looking back, I realize that I’ve actually played enough pure adventure games that came out in 2010 to rank my favorite ones.

@bowlisimo I see your “booooooo” and raise you a “hey, at least it’s good for watchin'”.

The only media outlet I’ll pay attention to for their GOTY discussion is Giant Bomb. Say what you will about their weekly show but when it comes to their GOTY struggle, they break that shit down Squad-style.

FYI, there will be a “year in review” SquadCast recorded this weekend. Two Squaddies will even be in the same room during recording. It will be monumental.

Wait you guys are actually looking at media GOTY awards? Yeah I kinda said “eff that” once I started deciding what my own favorite games of the year were.

I’ll probably take a peek at the AIAS awards once they run in February – AFTER the year in observation is actually over.

@beige Amnesia didn’t make it as a nominee for atmosphere or sound design (or anything for that matter)? And why the eff is Dead Rising 2 a nominee for best PC game? Gamespot still sucks.
