Let’s do this. Frozen Synapse name: RocGaude

Now that I have a faster internet connection, I’m going to try to download and install the Witcher one more time. If it doesn’t work this time, I’m just going to read the Squad notes about it and dive into Witcher 2 on the 360.

I also agree with @redswir1 that we should limit the Hitman mission (should that be the winner) to just Blood Money. Sure, we can refer to the other games but limitations are a task manager’s best friend.

Don’t worry @bowlisimo, Ms. Love’s mission will live on should you wish to shout in that cavern later on. 😉

I guess everyone is done with Christine Love? Yes to Hitman, and I’m also in for Frozen Synapse, at least to help fill out the bracket. I haven’t played it in a month. They ever merge those servers?

@beige Supposedly there is. There was an intro movie talking about rampant terraforming A.I. messing up the galaxy a millennium ago and cutting off Earth yadda yadda, but I’ll be damned if any of that is apparent from the outset. I was dropped into a ship pointed at a distant flight school instructor that I had to fly over and talk to, instead of the other way around. That’s about all the direction I was given. I picked “humble merchant” though, so I suppose if you picked one of the harder characters, you’d start closer to the action. I figured I’d build up a modest trading empire and combat fleet before tackling any of the story.

@unmanneddrone Worked in some ore and silicon wafer (which sounds delicious) trading last night. Realized quickly that I didn’t really have the capacity to make a lot of profit from that, but still made headway. Also, accidentally got into some illegal rum running. It turns out “space fuel” is code for “space hooch”, oops! The profits were huge, but the buyers were sparse, and I had to drop some of the cargo when the space police scanned my ship. Nuts. I didn’t count on space prohibition.

Later on I started dropping satellites in the various sectors, like you mentioned, and came across an alien selling his super freighter for half the cost of the ones being sold at the shipyard. Sure, it doesn’t have any shields, or any upgrades to speak of, but double the capacity, and half off! So, the alien parked it in the middle of nowhere and left in his space suit (lol), and I piloted my new lumbering acquisition into the nearest station to be outfitted. Hopefully tonight I can get this baby out and make some real scratch while I keep doing the milk runs with the smaller hauler. Any advice on remote trading?

@cptcarnage I actually suggest we do restrict a Hitman mission to just Blood Money. In my opinion it’s the only one you really need to play. Silent Assassin was cool, but BM has completely out-done it.

Anyway, now that you guys got me posting, I should bring up some absolutely infuriating shit I just read from Take Two about XCOM.

“The ‘90s generation of gamers all love Xcom and we own the IP, so we thought OK, what do we do with it? Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it. But the problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing – strategy games are just not contemporary.

“I use the example of music artists. Look at someone old school like Ray Charles, if he would make music today it would still be Ray Charles but he would probably do it more in the style of Kanye West. Bringing Ray Charles back is all fine and good, but it just needs to move on, although the core essence will still be the same.

“That’s what we are trying to do. To renew Xcom but in line with what this generation of gamers want. The team behind it is asking themselves every day: ‘Is it true to the values of the franchise?’ It’s not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing.”

I still haven’t played that complete X-Com collection I got for $5 at a Steam Sale three years ago, but this is what I hate about AAA gaming today. It’s killing genres.

I know real-time strategy games have never really worked that well on consoles, but turn-based has worked out just fine. Just look at all the stuff from Nintendo Intelligent Systems or Final Fantasy Tactics. The one game the new XCOM should be trying to emulate is probably Valkyria Chronicles.

@rocgaude I’d totally be down for a Hitman mission, I don’t think we need to restrict it to only Blood Money.

You guys up for the next mission? Here are my picks:

    Hitman: Blood Money
    Dawn of War II
    Vampire: Bloodlines

…also, I heavily recommend getting this Frozen Synapse tourney under way.

@angryjedi That sounds like a job for you, @shingro, and @unmanneddrone. You all ARE the lords of the underdogs these days.

@sinfony Damn straight it was Shift! Great sense of speed, best cockpit view, with the sound design and acoustics finest in the genre. The only think stopping me from picking up Shift 2 for the moment is having nabbed Dirt 2 on PC. Shift 2 certainly looks excellent, the crowning achievement being the driver view shifting into corners…amazing what such a simply mechanic can do to enhance the thrill of driving.

@bowlisimo Don’t be ashamed of watching Pro League! I do wish other strategy games received the same treatment, though.

I’m up for Trackmania, but when it comes down to it, I wonder how it’ll go as a Squad Mission…hard to get too chin-strokey with a racing game. Will it be just a mission of lap times and crazy moments? If so, it’d certainly be an easy one to covert simply into the space usually occupied by the topic of a normal Season 2 Squadcast.

EDIT: Man, I’ve been getting some RUSE on this weekend. Shogun 2 keeps tugging at my sleeve, but there’s something so special about Eugen’s title. Wish more folks took notice of this last year. Ah well.

@bowlisimo anytime, pleased to entertain =D

@rocgaude I’d have probably had more, but you weren’t in the last show, sorry my brain is entirely associative

@angryjedi I’d support a Trackmania if it means a mission though damned if I know anything about it and am crap at piloting things in general. I think The Void might also be a promising excursion since it has so much of those things the squad likes to dig into, (bizzare game mechanic, atmosphere, etc)

I’d also say that missions are pretty key, there’s lots of podcasts that do topic chinstroking but the squad’s missions are pretty close to unique. Also: I crave the telegraph dispatch.

I don’t mind if it takes a long time between misions (one every two months?) but a mission and vote-board would be good

@unmanned drone Oh right, I totally forgot about that, Pete also has a storied gaming history from which he can tell tales from before funcoland… wasn’t…. C64 era even!

There were also some comments a while back on Twitter about a few listeners who miss the mission format. Perhaps we could do one every so often as a one-off.

    I vote TrackMania.

@shingro Ha! The “cool nerd”…I’ll take it. 😉

@unmanneddrone My “broadcaster cadence” will find its way to the surface in the near future. I have some ideas swirling about that need to crystallize first.

Missions. Yeah, remember those? Those WERE cool, right? I’m really starting to miss ’em…

@redswir1 I’d say Project Dust might stand a good chance as a future squad mission.

What I would be interested in is the Squad reaction to something like the new Medal of Honor. It’s hard to get folks excited about a military first-person shooter – especially the hallowed SoS, but I’m wondering if this is one where the balance of emotion and narrative is equal to that of action. I must admit, I’m a cynic on shooters with stories – especially ones involving any sort of historic or contemporary conflict – but the “Leave a Message” trailer was surprisingly emotional. I just hope they keep the title as consistently evocative as the trailer itself.
