    Hello friends,

I know have been MIA for a while, busy times and I just recieved a 5 day holiday (it’s the last day of Ramadan today and Eid follows) so I got a good chunk to do the things I wanna do. Lately I’ve been playing Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey on the DS but keep going and coming back on Valhalla Knights on PSP (actually, playing it on the Vita, found it for like $6 on a sale, which I think is still going on), VK didn’t get much praise critically, being it is kinda unpolished. It is a proper dungeon crawler with a more traditional RPG approach, the way it presents itself however sort of gave me a flashback to something missing in games nowadays.

I wonder if any of you played any of the Tobal series, Ehregeiz or a Japan-only title known as Abala Burn. I don’t predates it, but there was a handful roguelike side modes in some PS1 fighting games coming from RPG developers (Square-Enix, Tamsoft, etc.), these modes probably could have been my earliest experience with roguelikes as a kid.

    (gameplay starts at 2:00)

I’ve been kinda wondering, why don’t they make these anymore? Or at least, has there been any notable ones in recent date? I would sure love to play one if there are any. I guess Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls could be a fair candidate as a full game of that kind of thing, but I’m thinking of something more randomly generated.

The SEGA Collection in the Steam sale is something I will gleefully purchase before the sale ends on the 23rd. Not only does it have a ton of great Genesis classics, but it also includes Binary Domain and Sonic Generations, both of which I have been meaning to pick up for a while now. For those of you who just want some of the old school Genesis goodness, there is a pack for that as well, although it leaves out the fifth pack which has some of the greatest games ever made (aka Phantasy Star II and PS IV).

It’s incredibly surreal to look at my Wishlist and see everything but two games on sale, especially stuff like Jade Empire that never goes on sale as far as I can tell.

@shingro I’ve been meaning to ask, since I figure you would know, what is the best arcade stick out there? I sold my SFIV stick a couple of years ago when I was moving along with my copy of SSFIV, but I am going to get back into 2D fighters when Persona 4 Arena comes out. I will definitely be going PS3 since I know that’s the system that tends to have the biggest communities, and it’s free to play online. I’m not super picky in that Sanwa and Seimitsu buttons both feel damn good to me, but I would like something that’s comfortable to hold in my lap since that’s how I prefer to play. (Bonus points if it’s easy to take apart and apply new artwork/buttons/balls for the stick.)

@shingro Y’know what? I’m starting to realize that I might be just fine sticking with 3rd Strike Online for a while. And when I say 3rd Strike Online, I really mean just getting my ass kicked by the CPU. I just don’t see a 2D experience that has topped it yet, even if you suck at the game.

I can survive online in SSF4AE2K12, so I’ll break that out every now and again, and I’m trying to make Soul Calibur V a multiplayer fixture in my life. I was able to fairly quickly beat my entire PSN friends list in SC4, so we’ll see. That right there already strangles off any time I might have for other fighters, which is sad. I rented The King of Fighters XIII and thought it would be nice to finally learn that series… if I had time. The same might happen to Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown since that’s another franchise I’ve never really been able to step into. Persona 4 Arena also deserves a shot I guess.

I can’t get into Marvel vs Capcom though. Can’t do it. The game is too fast and too cracked-out. I bought MvC3 and after a little while realized that I was so lost that sometimes I would win a battle and not know how. Maybe when UMvC3 is $20 I’ll trade in the original for it. Street Fighter X Tekken? Not even on my radar.

…but I’ll still probably be mainly playing 3rd Strike in between all that.

I love fighting games, but Capcom has become incredibly exploitative with it’s business practices lately, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record comes to mind (Exactly the same game as Dead rising 2 for full price with a different protagonist copy->pasted in, to be fair, they gave him new lines in response to events, but ‘cmon…) Ultimate MvC3 as fun as it is to watch is basically the completed version of MvC3 (MvC3 didn’t even have a year of play before it was retired, missing entire features every other fighting game had) DLC is pricey comparatively. etc.

Like I said before, it comes down to ‘do you trust the publisher’ and Capcom has been working very hard in recent years to make sure I say ‘no, no I don’t.’

Which is too bad because the actual dudes on the ground can do some good work when they’re given the time and money.

As for DLC on the disk in concept, I don’t like it, consumer-wise I’d like as much as I can get for the dollars I pay, I don’t think there’s any shame in that. Give me Borderlands-style DLC a month down the line and I’ll shell out with a smile on my face, but to give me content on the disk it either has to be small/broken (due to short development time) or substantial (cut features) and I’ll be a bit miffed.

Besides, if it becomes something that’s just accepted it just means some other company somewhere down the road is going to push the boundary even further and in a more egregious way. No thank you.

A Japanese player just beat all of america’s top players in UMvC3 with a team of Vewtiful Joe/Rocket Raccoon/Frank West. If you know anything about the UMvC3 teirs and the history of japan’s capabiltiy in the MvC series I’ll pause while you pick your jaw up off the floor

Anyway, they were really good games, all of Final Round XV Should be archived on Teamsp00ky (http://www.twitch.tv/teamsp00ky) and FunkyP’s (http://www.twitch.tv/funkyp) streams. Absolutely amazing matches for everything (Though I’d have liked to see some Raph and other character diversity in SCV :/)

Mmmmm, fighting games… I went to tournaments for many many many fighting games, but never actually got anywhere except in the most extraordinary circumstances. However I still love me some fighting games… unfortunately, MK9 isn’t likely to be it. I don’t suppose there’s any PS3 Blazblue/Marvel Vs Capcom 3 love about?

Edit: (Also, I tossed out a few steam invites to names I recognized on steam, hope you don’t mind)
