Suddenly, I have this urge to play Earthbound, where do I start? Do I play the NES game first?

@shingro on the whole Earthbound thing, morality actually isn’t the first reason for my aversion to ROMs. I understand that unless there’s some kind of re-release (which are common these days), there’s no way I’ll ever be able to buy the game again in a way that benefits its creators.

The real reason is that I just like to play old games in their original format and interface. I hate the idea of playing all those old games on a computer monitor with a keyboard. I want to play Earthbound on a TV with a Super NES pad or something resembling it.

One of the reasons I buy a lot of games on Virtual Console actually is because the Wii Remote and Wii Classic Controller resemble the NES and SNES controllers respectively closely enough. I also enjoy little touches they employed like instruction manuals and a save state system that doesn’t break the game. That’s why I still think VC would be the ideal way for me to enjoy Earthbound today.

Maybe one day after I’ve built my next gaming PC and hooked it up to an HDTV I might buy a USB SNES pad and play some ROMs on that. I wonder why no one has actually come out with a “ROM set-top box” yet (that I know of). The PS3 with custom firmware could have become that, and I guess if you have a spare Xbox to leave offline you can hack that.

If the Squad ever DID want to do an Earthbound mission, I could probably be easily convinced to allow my copy to be passed around. I’d rather it be in the hands of appreciative people, who I know would eventually send it back, than sell it for a hundred bucks or so and watch it disappear into oblivion.

    Just saying…

Earthbound? Just put the damn thing on Virtual Console so I can actually get a chance to play it without paying $100.

You guys may complain about the lack of any more Mother games on the US, but the people who have it really damn bad are those who never got the chance to play Earthbound in the first place (and don’t want to pirate it).

I would be happy if Nintendo would just put Earthbound up on Virtual Console, but it looks like that isn’t happening. I have not fact checked everything on this list, but anyone who is a fan of Earthbound should check it out, as there is some interesting stuff heret: http://earthboundcentral.com/2009/02/earthbound-legal-issues/

@Zegolf since they sort of unofficially let the japanese Earthbound 3 get translated by fans and let that Earthbound 4 fan project continue, Earthbound as a Nintendo property is almost certainly dead in the water. Heck, considering how brutally Nintendo get legal-y sometimes it’s a project not even in the water, it’s a boat impaled on a mountaintop somewhere

@sinfony I’ll agree with you, 100%, on the remakes. I don’t want a remake, though. I want a new Earthbound game. Doesn’t even have to be the same characters, or even a sequel. I just want the same quirkiness and emotion that a game like Earthbound was able to draw from me. I don’t really see what’s wrong with wanting more of a good thing. I always want more steak, because I love steak.

I will, from time to time, put my copy of Earthbound (also have the original players guide!) back in my SNES and just replay the ending save, so I guess that’ll have to suffice, because I don’t ever see that franchise coming back.

@zegolf Earthbound is nearly solely responsible for my sister being into gaming. She even named one of her cats Ms Saturn. I myself had my tiny mind blown when I got to the ending playing it on my SNES. Very very clever game for its time and a great example of a game that almost can’t be made by large publishers for modern systems now unfortunately. It’s very hard to make a game that whimsical with a very hard to describe feel all the way through. It’s nearly impossible to make that game via committee, I barely understand how they did it the first time.

But oh yes, wonderful game. You could almost use it as a test for Replicants because the emotions it generates are just so odd and…. subtle? childlike? I dunno something like that.

I generally loathe Kotaku, only because of their “Gawker-ness” but this comic really hit home for me….

That being said, I really wish the Squad would do Earthbound. How many people have actually played, and completed, this gem?

@RedSwirl legally? Hell, that might even be public domain by now.

The emulation method is probably the only way it can be done. Earthbound was probably my favorite SNES game, ever. I know I’ve played through it dozens of times. Still got the guidebook, with naked Ness, and everything!

Assuming you all saw this, but I just picked this off of @DavidDWinn’s twitter feed – http://www.infendo.com/odesu-ka/

I’d be pretty darn excited about this, and if it was a 3DS release, I may be convinced to get one.
