@unmanneddrone @bluesforbuddha I had completely forgotten about the sharks vs. divers game. I still want that so, so badly. Didn’t Dino-DDay turn out to be terrible or something? If so, we need a good people vs. animals game.

@beige Still submerged in development, I do believe! Rest assured, the minute that surfaces (men have died for lesser punning), we’ll jump in (*gunshot*).

@cgrajko I’d love to play some NeoTokyo, but you know, I don’t have the Orange box or HL2 on PC. I should rectify that down the line, but I really would only have interest in nabbing the SDK for checking out mods. NeoTokyo is definitely one of the mods that I’d love to investigate.

@RedSwirl As much as I’d love another Afrika, I doubt there’s much market for our “drive/swim about, look at things” yearning. Sad realities. But if you check out the site, they very much state Depth is NOT a shooter. You’ve got defenses, and hell, stab a shark in the eye if it comes to it, but it’s a stealth game first and foremost…and you seem to be all about them.

@RedSwirl I would also play another Endless Ocean game. The first two were pretty cool, which makes it a shame they got unfairly maligned by some of the more “core” gamers out there. It was good times diving around in the ocean and looking at stuff.

I’d be interested in playing Depth game with all of you. I pretty much never play multiplayer stuff, but I would be more inclined to do so if I didn’t have to play with the knuckleheads on public servers. I am also a fan of any game that lets me play as a cool animal. I even played Deadly Creatures for that exact reason.

Speaking of competitive multiplayer. Would anyone be interested in playing Neotokyo with me some time? It’s a HL2 mod, so all you need is the SDK Base, which is included with The Orange Box, and Half-Life 2, which means that most folks who play stuff on Steam probably have it lying around. Neotokyo is a cyberpunkish team based shooter, and it draws heavily on Shadowrun and Ghost in the Shell for inspiration both in terms of its art style and its environments. There are three classes available, and a couple of them have goodies like thermoptic camouflage and enhanced sprint. I’ve only played it once a year or so ago, but I had a good time. You can see more about it here in case anyone is interested in playing with me some time: http://www.neotokyohq.com/about.html

@unmanneddrone Man fuck all the shooting and sharks and shit. I just want another Endless Ocean game in a modern graphics engine. Complete with Enya. Better yet, a Zelda-style adventure game that’s underwater. Then again, I hear that for some inexplicable reason people hate swimming in video games.

That Shark game looks like the kind of idea that could have come out during the Half-life mod heyday.

@beige Indeed, one team plays the hapless divers, the other a mob of razor-toothed, dead-eyed beauties. Good to see Dinosaurs and Sharks on the agenda. This, Primal Carnage and Orion: Prelude…more dangerous critters please.

This is what the website offers up:

Off the coast of present day Mexico a team of fearless divers are preparing to loot sunken treasure from shark infested waters. To emerge with their limbs intact, they must use every trick at their disposal to outsmart, avoid, or disable a pack of vicious man-eating sharks. Depth is a competitive multiplayer game which blends heart pounding hide-and-seek gameplay and visceral action in a dark aquatic world. Predator, or Thief. which will you be?

• Be a Shark: Take control of a 21 foot man-eater as you find and dismember sneaky divers.
• Shark vision: Experience the sights , sounds and smells of the shark’s world. Track prey by the disturbances they make in the water, or the sound of their heartbeat.
• Be a Thief: Loot a wealth of glittering Sunken booty from the bottom of the ocean, by outsmarting and evading your hungry opposition.
• Heart Pounding Stealth: Take cover in dense sea-weed, squeeze into wrecks, and stay as quiet as possible while sharks patrol overhead!
• Full Body Dismemberment: Tear off your victim’s limbs one by one and leave him to bleed out, or show him mercy and end it with a final bite.

Excellent. Fellows, this has been kicking around for a bit, but if one thing can top the nervous quick-witted multiplayer of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, it’s the lurking dread of asymmetrical prey/predation; of man nigh helpless, out of his element against the merciless instincts of mother nature’s oldest and finest toys. Behold, the mighty DEPTH:

Competitive multiplayer at its most curious, glorious and terrifying. Forget the science of Selachimorphic electroreception, the act of hiding mortified within a kelp thicket to dodge C. Carcharias sounds like wicked fun.

Out sometime in the future.
