@bowlisimo Indeed, “free to play” is always code for “unbalanced for the peasants, not bad for the cardholders” most of the time. But, what I’ve played of it seems to suggest the cards are pretty well integrated into the system. You can only bring twelve of them into a battle, so it’s not a total CCG in that regard – and for what it’s worth, it seems you can get by simply by playing the game to nab yourself more packs with the experience system without ever busting out the Diner’s Club card.

Anecdotally, I had a great time in one battle, where card combinations and troop placement really highlighted the system. I had a forward force moving towards the enemy HQ, though the midfield was still spotted with enemy troops. I raced a recon unit up into range on the HQ, threw down a card called “Last Stand”, which allowed for a two-turn deployment of a heavy tank, an AA, an artillery gun and a recon to spawn on my HQ. Then, I applied the “Airlift” card, which allowed me to move three ground units to an adjacent unit anywhere on the map. Thus, I picked the heavy tank and artillery gun from my HQ and another tank from the midfield to drop right next to the recon at the enemy HQ. THEN, I applied a +60-70 attack buff to one of the arty guns and hit submit. By the time the two-turn deployment of the Last Stand units wore off and they disappeared, I’d hammered the enemy HQ for half its hit points and my midfield convoy had arrived to finish it off.

It really took me by surprise, I gotta admit! Apparently the Starcraft 2 Team Liquid guys are big on it, too. Anyway, I’ll keep plugging at it during the late hours and see what other card antics I can find.

By the way, you a Lemmings guy? Found this brilliant game that’s coming out – Clones. Only a demo thus far, but man, the little I’ve dabbled in it makes me think the PC SoS delegation might get a kick out of it. Hotkeyed competitive Lemmings doesn’t sound fun, but it’s actually really inventive.

And Apache should do very well for itself! Anyway, let me know if you end up scooping it up. It’s available on PC, too. Only Yuplay right now, but no doubt it’ll jump to Steam, Gamersgate etc. upon release.

@RedSwirl Fear not, dear Swear-bear. Respect to the rap/hip-hop genre, preferably to the more creative acts. Antipop Consortium’s Arrhythmia is an album I hold dear to my heart.

@bowlisimo Have you heard of Battledex, sir? Strat-nerd viagra in a free-to-play online PC hex-based Advance Wars (but far, far better) with an integrated CCG component for unit buffs and special abilities. It’s pretty terrific. Just dropped the other month and a lot more fun than it initially appears to be. Uses the simultaneous turn system we see in Frozen Synapse, Funatics’ PSP Endwar title etc. Solid as a rock and runs on anything.
