@scribl @angryjedi I’m also weirdly interested in The Last Story. I think I’ll throw it in my GameFly queue and give a weekend to it.

@feenwager And I see that you went back and replayed Mass Effect 2 after pissing off the entire Internet with your title for this: http://bitmob.com/articles/i-dont-ever-want-to-play-mass-effect-2-again

The only Mass Effect that I will be going back to is Shadow Broker, which I’ve only barely started.

I totally think there should be a Dwarf Fortress mission — if only to help me comprehend ascii graphics.

@feenwager Exactly, because that I get. Although, I had a decent experience with Homeland, but I can see the occasional lag causing that kind of experience.

Just listened to the 2011 review episode, and I screamed at the podcast when Jeff said Onlive doesn’t work in that nonchalant voice.

Then how did I play the entirety of Saints Row 3 on it?

I realize that you were saying on a macro level, if all Xbox gamers were using an Onlive service, then no company could handle that server load. That’s not really true. Streaming games us essentially the same as streaming movies, technically speaking. If that works, why can’t Onlive?

I know I brought this game up the other day, but have you guys been paying attention to Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP. It was just released for iPad, and it looks great.

Well, it also includes this feature that allows players to tweet any line of dialogue from the game. It has cause my twitter feed to be overtaken by the game. It is kinda crazy.

I don’t have an iPad, and was just wondering if anyone on the squad had given it a chance yet.

  • Jeff Grubb 3:48 am on March 2, 2011 Permalink

Thanks, guys. This has been really helpful.

  • Jeff Grubb 1:36 am on March 1, 2011 Permalink

Also, how many of you, if any, are going to PAX East?

  • Jeff Grubb 1:36 am on March 1, 2011 Permalink

Alright, need help for an article. You people will be my “man on the street.”

So, a new iOS game is taking the world by storm. It is called Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. It has been in development for a while and in that time the independent developer has grown very close to members of the press. I believe many of them would call the developer their friend.

How does that make you feel?

Is there a difference in your perception of a journalists relationship between a big publisher and an independent developer?

If you are bothered by the closeness of journalists and an independent developer, why? And are you as equally put off by journalists who get flown out to events and receive free copies of games to review?

That x-axis inversion is very common in Japanese games.

  • Jeff Grubb 1:25 am on January 31, 2011 Permalink

    Sometimes I do invert X.

I don’t know. I only do it when I feel like I am controlling a camera on a stick and fulcrum. In that case it make sense that you push down and the camera pivots on the fulcrum and looks up, and if you push the stick to the left then it the camera pivots to the right…

    Still. Inverted Y, always.

    Oh my god!

The Dark Engine source code — used on games like Thief, Thief II, and System Shock 2 — has been discovered after gathering dust in a shipping bag for four years. This could mean amazing things. For one, the community for these games will probably start with taking those three games above and optimizing them for current systems.

    What a great story.

Yo, if you haven’t bought Minecraft yet, then do it now.

Minecraft will enter beta, raise in price, and charge for future updates on December 20.

However, if you buy it while it is alpha then you will never have to pay for an update.

  • Jeff Grubb 6:33 pm on December 12, 2010 Permalink

@angryjedi OK, from that, I don’t feel too terrible about missing Morrowind. Plus, Patrick Stewart is a god so it’d be hard for me to go back.

  • Jeff Grubb 5:43 pm on December 12, 2010 Permalink

I didn’t want to put it on the list of 2011 games, because I just didn’t believe it, but the VGAs confirmed Elder Scrolls V for 11-11-11.

Quick question, are there any among us that believe that Morrowwind was better than Oblivion? I understand that this is a common sentiment among people who have played both — I haven’t — and I was wondering if someone could explain it.

  • Jeff Grubb 10:41 pm on December 10, 2010 Permalink

I know what you all really want…

That is my guess at what the beginning of a round of Mass Effect multiplayer is going to sound like.

  • Jeff Grubb 8:52 pm on December 10, 2010 Permalink

    OK, 2011…

    Killzone 3 – Feh
    Uncharted 3 – Yay!
    Resistance 3 – Feh
    Little Big Planet 2 -Feh
    Marvel V Capcom 3 – Yay!
    L.A. Noire – Really intrigued.
Batman: Arkham City – I loved the first one
    Homefront – I’m curious.
    Twisted Metal – feh
    inFamous 2 – feh
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – I don’t know. There is a reason that this type of Sci-fi doesn’t get made anymore.
Bulletstorm – If this were $20 bucks I think I’d be interested.
    Portal 2 – Of course.
Dragon Age 2 – bout to finally play the first.
Mass Effect 3 – Same here.
Assassin’s Creed 3 – just bought Brotherhood, but this will really depend on the reviews.
    DYNASTY WARRIORS 7!!!! – …
Gears of War 3 – feh
    Dead Space 2 – Yay!
Duke Nukem Forever – who the fuck knows.
Zelda – if it comes out, then I will play it.
Lost in Shadow – I’m curious.
Diablo III (yeah right) – 2012
    Rage – 2012
Pokemon Black and White Editions – depends on my mood when they are released.

What did I miss? If you want, do the same.

If we want to jump right into a conversation about this, I would like to say that the Wii, DS, and PSP look absolutely barren.

  • Jeff Grubb 11:51 pm on December 6, 2010 Permalink

Well, in the PR I just got from Steam they did say “No purchase necessary” so there is probably some loop hole buried in the legal for people who don’t want to buy those games.

    Someone find it.

I’ve shipped 4 million pieces of poo down the toilet before, doesn’t mean I sold any…

Not to compare Move to poo.

  • Jeff Grubb 5:18 am on December 6, 2010 Permalink

Oh yeah, I just realized why this Holiday is the way it is for Sony.

They thought Move would be huge… god damn it.

  • Jeff Grubb 5:17 am on December 6, 2010 Permalink

@RedSwirl Yeah, GT3 or GT4 was the best selling PS2 game, I can’t remember which. As much as we like to think that we — as gamers — take our hobby seriously, we don’t really compare to how hardcore car people can be.

  • Jeff Grubb 5:05 am on December 6, 2010 Permalink

Who is playing Super Meat Boy where?

I’m on 360, and I would like to compare times so, yeah. Jobe1UP on the old XBLives.

  • Jeff Grubb 5:03 am on December 6, 2010 Permalink

    I mean, Gran Turismo 5…

I know that isn’t for any of us, but it is huge with the non-gamer crowd. There are a lot of car people out there that will buy a PS3 strictly for GT5.

But that still isn’t really a counter point to @feenwager‘s initial question. There is something just not right about Sony’s offerings in the States. GT5 is enough in Japan and Europe, @angryjedi not withstanding, but they love that game there.

Sony may just be forfeiting North America to Microsoft. Because even though the NPDs every month have the 360 outselling the PS3, Sony has still just recently overtaken the 360 Worldwide.

    Here are the anticipated releases:
Little Big Planet 2 – Jan (This should have been holiday 10)
Mass Effect 2 – Jan (hmmm)
Killzone 3 – Feb (not for me, but it has its fans)
    Final Fantasy XIV – March
    Infamous 2 (Sure)
    Resistance 3 (Nah)
    Twisted Metal (Really depends)

So, that leaves nothing I’m excited for until The Last Guardian. Whenever that is coming out.

Thankfully, I just recently got my PS3 so I have some catching up to do.

For the two of you wondering, don’t get Medal of Honor. It is a C and maybe worth a rent. I think the multiplayer is fun, but it won’t be able to stand toe-to-toe with Halo or CoD so stick with those.

Have you lot recorded the latest cast? If not here is another for the Fight!

With Minecraft jump starting everyone on sandbox games again, what does our esteemed panel have to say about journey versus the destination in gaming.

In the case of videogames I would say that the journey is the playing of the game part, while the destination would be any narrative in between. This is an incredibly simplified and black and white way of looking at it, but no one started a fight by being nuanced.

@Scribl @RedSwirl No, it isn’t a debug, it is a Gold release copy. I literally just got the UPS package today. They sent it to me for reviewing on Kombo, obviously before they knew Kombo was kaput. I’ll have to do something with it though.
