@bowlisimo @feenwager Might I suggest Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey? It is a completely different tone to the Persona series, is challenging but hadn’t faced issues of spending a long time grinding, I’m still in the middle of the game though.

@rocgaude You seem pretty set with that Vita list, I’d probably add Corpse Party, but not sure if it’s your kinda thing. I’d add Vagrant Story to that list in case you haven’t played that yet. As for Final Fantasy Tactics, are you going for the PSP or PS1 version?

    Edit: Velocity!

    Tags: The Banner Saga

This week I decided to go “no-games” for a week to focus on reading and writing (started on Thursday). However, I decided to break that a bit just to try The Banner Saga’s multiplayer beta.

I was looking for a good turn-based SRPG to play for a while, got plenty already (was even tempted to get the new XCOM at one point). The beta is just multiplayer and the full game will include a story and dialogue driven single player. From the multiplayer, the game plays a lot like FFT with several changes. the game is absolutely amazing so far, was wondering if any of you interested for multiplayer down the line.

@redswir1 I really need to get around playing Gemini Rue, yeah they’re making a game, looks excellent too. They got a nice tutorial for sprite work on the same page as Primordia, really looking forward to what they’re making.

On the note of Point & Click, I finally got around to finish Indiana Jones & the Fate of atlantis, it was among the first point and click games I’ve ever played and probably the reason why I got into them, gonna listen to the squadcast since the game is pretty fresh in my head right now.

(yeah, I’ve gone MIA for a while, been busy with plenty of stuff, and I might just pop up every now and then as usual).

@unmanneddrone My goodness, I’m liking what I see of RetroBlazer.

I recently beat Sword & Sworcery, really loved the end bit of the game, such a beautiful game. Now I’m suffering to progress in Valhalla Knights, the first 15 hours or so have been fun, and I’ve spent the other 5 grinding to beat one other boss… something’s not right here. Played a bit of Daxter too, which is more fun than I expected so far.

A while back I started a small art project as a “draw what you play” to put all the games played in some sort of visual timeline, I’m nearly done inking the first page and almost ready to start on the second, if any of you fellows wish to join, please let me know.

I had a series of the craziest realizations ever just now:

    1. I find out that Earth Defense Force exists in portable form
    2. I find out that part 3 is on Vita and it looks like the one on 360
    3. I find out that it’s the EXACT same one that was released on 360 back in 2006/2007 (Earth Defense Force 2017)
    4. I find out it was released today in Japan

As if that didn’t blow my mind enough, it has local and online 4 player co-op. I really hope this game makes it to the west.

A little late, but babut from Games12, the event I mentioned a few days back, didn’t have the chance to play all the games, but was able to play the two games I wanted to play the most.

Being someone who has been really tired of the original series, the reboot looked pretty promising to me (being a fan of Ninja Theory’s stuff). I can safely say I’m pretty excited about this new game, the pulling yourself and/or the enemy makes for some really interesting strategy, expecially with Ninja Theory’s idea about having different set attacks while holding the shoulder buttons.

    Metal Gear Rising:

Another game I was looking forward to, they got themselves quite a solid fighting system, the slicing is especially fun despite being an absolute win button as long as the enemy is in swords reach.

It’s gonna be a good time for hack ‘n’ slash games, this is gonna be pretty fun. There were booths for Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed 3,Dishonored, Playstation Allstars and Epic Mickey I wanted to try out, but didn’t have the chance to.

I’ve been off for a while, was quite busy. I finished A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda just last night, pretty fun but a little short. Mixes a lot of things including Mega Man X, Contra, Abuse and a tiny bit of Turrican.

Games12 is on tomorrow, it’s Dubai’s equivalent to a TGS or an E3, except they don’t announce anything, just preview unreleased games and plenty of cosplay, it’s on until Saturday.

@unmanneddrone I too was a bit underwhelmed by Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but maybe because the first Deus Ex ran off with my heart a few months before HR’s release. The game is good, but I had really high expectations coming from the first game (gave the second one a pass because it just didn’t work on my machine at all).

  • Mohammad AlHuraiz 2:39 pm on September 4, 2012 Permalink

@unmanneddrone really? lol I was hoping for something unexpectedly good, I was at a point in my life buying a bunch of random bargain bin games for review for my old site (Lochal Archade) hoping I’d find a few gems. I’ll get around trying it sooner or later but I got a massive list I need to go through before I play anything else.

I just beat Nier, what I think about it is a bit of a mixed bag (I did say apart from the music that it was horseshit on twitter, and I’m at the point where maybe I’m a little harsh but I left the game not wanting any more of it). Nier has a few qualities and some moments, I mean the characters were great and some of the writing was honestly entertaining, otherwise I had a hard time enjoying the game overall.

All I’m thinking right now is that I can finally listen to the Squadcast mission that I’ve been keeping on hold for so long.

@redswir1 I reviewed Solatorobo for the squad! I really love the game, I would kill to see a sequel. I do suggest you carry on with the game, I can’t say it’s short (20 hour game where each 10 hours are their own stories), but it is one of those games that will stick to you even after you’ve beaten it and put it back in the shelf.

@impyknickers yeah, the language in E.Y.E. is made up

In case you don’t know, the PSOne classics support update for the Vita is up, the emulation but has a pretty inconvenient form of getting the games on it (Oh, Sony…)

Something that not a lot of people are talking about is that Playstation Mobile games (games that are available on Playstation-certified Android phones) are going to be playable on Vita, I can’t find a way to get the games there but there are a few I would like to finally play on there (Namely the Dead Space mobile game that I keep hearing is pretty good).

I also recently beat Darksiders 2, in some cases it’s better than the first, but I really do miss the dungeons designed around ruined modern day buildings the first game had, the final boss was pathetic but I guess the ending wasn’t anything to complain about. Looking forward to the next two, I wonder how they play on the next games.

  • Mohammad AlHuraiz 10:28 am on August 26, 2012 Permalink

I can’t believe this past me, but CyberConnect2’s CEO in the beginning of this month was hinting a Solatorobo sequel, but they’re not sure which platform to have the game one. I’d be a big liar if I said I wasn’t beside myself with such a tease, I’m really REALLY excited.

    Hello friends,

I know have been MIA for a while, busy times and I just recieved a 5 day holiday (it’s the last day of Ramadan today and Eid follows) so I got a good chunk to do the things I wanna do. Lately I’ve been playing Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey on the DS but keep going and coming back on Valhalla Knights on PSP (actually, playing it on the Vita, found it for like $6 on a sale, which I think is still going on), VK didn’t get much praise critically, being it is kinda unpolished. It is a proper dungeon crawler with a more traditional RPG approach, the way it presents itself however sort of gave me a flashback to something missing in games nowadays.

I wonder if any of you played any of the Tobal series, Ehregeiz or a Japan-only title known as Abala Burn. I don’t predates it, but there was a handful roguelike side modes in some PS1 fighting games coming from RPG developers (Square-Enix, Tamsoft, etc.), these modes probably could have been my earliest experience with roguelikes as a kid.

    (gameplay starts at 2:00)

I’ve been kinda wondering, why don’t they make these anymore? Or at least, has there been any notable ones in recent date? I would sure love to play one if there are any. I guess Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls could be a fair candidate as a full game of that kind of thing, but I’m thinking of something more randomly generated.

@redswir1 well something didn’t rub me the right way with the PC version of Darksiders (I originally played and finished it on PS3 and got the PC version for free with Spacemarine) in terms of the controls, and the fact that activating controller controls being a “hack” was really off putting. Sure, the combat lacks the depth the mentioned games have, but I thought it was good

@mjpilon I dunno, I kinda like the direction Darksiders 2 is going, I’m getting that “everything but the kitchen sink” vibe too, but it is looking quite fun to me.

Also, what happened to the Minecraft server? I haven’t seen anyone on for the past few days, I haven’t seen any zombies or skeletons either.

Edit: false alarm, I see the hostile mobs again.

Tags: , , Nehrim: At Fate's Edge, , , Shadows of the Damned

Just played a bit of Alan Wake, can’t really say I enjoyed it, maybe I was expecting all the wrong things. I was hoping for a bit of a scare but I think Corpse Party desensitized me from any other kind of horror found in games (granted, it’s a completely different kind of game).

What I found in this game was faced a shooter with a mechanic I hate as much as cover shooting, I don’t know if it has a name, but I really don’t find any fun in this mechanic when it was in Shadows of the Damned or Red Faction: Armageddon – The mechanic of applying something onto an enemy before they turn vulnerable to take damage. Granted the game looks absolutely gorgeous on PC, though the gameplay I can do without.

Also I was playing Nehrim: At Fate’s Edge, a total conversion mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Basically takes all the assets in oblivion (alongside some extra stuff) and makes a completely new game out of it. Quite interesting as its free (requires a working copy of Oblivion though) and is a +60 hour game. The game, like Oblivion, is quite buggy, in fact it’s way more buggy, had the machine freeze on me twice trying to play the game. I would have carried on if it didn’t crap out, but I thought you guys might find it interesting.

@unmanneddrone Just played a quick 20 minute play through of Jagged alliance, this is definitely my kind of jam! Graphically, it looks like something that could possibly run on my Netbook, I’m giving that a try now.

@unmanneddrone I pre-purchased Jagged Alliance when it wasn’t out but I never played it. As for the steam sale, so far I was only able to nab the Alan Wake collection and pre-purchase Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

  • Mohammad AlHuraiz 10:26 am on July 16, 2012 Permalink

@redswir1 well the movie look to me is more a matter of preference more than anything regardless of what the director wanted, and isn’t Call of Duty a more fast paced game than Snake Eater? Dunno.

  • Mohammad AlHuraiz 5:53 am on July 16, 2012 Permalink

@redswir1 I thought so too, especially 3’s controls as I mentioned on my previous post. However, MGS 3 is one game, I’d rather play with the low framerate, it gave it that old movie look, so having it running on 60 fps would probably make it look like it was played on one of those TVs that make it look like it’s running on 120Hz or something.

As for the MSX games, just checked, yup, they’re included!

Tags: 50 Shades of Gray, Duke Nukem, , , , Pinball Arcade, , , VR Missions

For a month I’ve been contemplating whether or not I should get the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and I caved just a few hours ago and bought it. The port is a lot better than what I expected, I still haven’t tried out MGS 3 (which is the one I was worried about the most, that game required pressure controls that the PS2 and PS3, which was the main reason why I didn’t bother with the 3DS port), so there’s still a part of me that’s worried. Good thing is that the collection comes with the VR missions of the enhanced version of MGS 2 alongside a remade version of the first VR mission (which I’m not sure if it was on the enhanced version of MGS2). The VR Missions really needed to be on a portable one way or another, and I’m glad it did. If you already own the PS3 version of the collection, you can “transfar” your progress wirelessly to carry on wherever, which is a nice feature too.

I also downloaded Pinball Arcade, being a bit of a pinball nerd. Having virtual, old pinball machines of my childhood memories tucked in a handheld is something I quite like. I also like the fact that if you get the Vita version you get the PS3 version for free, it also works vice versa and the leaderboards are cross platform. It has a small feature which I thought was nice of them to have was that if you hold the Vita verticall, you can play with vertical screen set up (2 bottom corners of the front touch screen work as the controls for the flippers), it is very uncomfortable to hold the Vita in that placement, but I’m still glad that its there.

That’s enough of my Vita shenanigans, before I try to go back to bed I’ll leave you with a reading of 50 Shades of Gray by the voice of Duke Nukem:

P.S. I also heard there are rumors going around about a 3DS Solatorobo sequel, my prayers have been answered!

This video was floating around youtube, with the help of the Playstation Suite (sony’s Vita, mobile and tablet SDK) you can remotely play PC games from your PC. I managed to get the Suite running both my PC and Vita, but it appears that the developer didn’t post the remote play progam anywhere. Now I’m not sure if Sony would ever green light this thing to the public, but the fact that it exists and that the device has that capability got me all excited.

Main, this nails what attracted me to Solatorobo in the first place. I haven’t gotten to finish the game yet, but I was instantly drawn in by its charm that reminded me of the games, movies, and TV shows you mentioned. It just nails that bright charm. It also brings back pre-rendered backgrounds to great effect.
